“Hacker cons are becoming too political” Please read some hacker history. Please revisit talk titles from the first 5 Congresses. Hacking has always been political—tech is political.
Noteworthy this complaint often comes from folks in the sec industry who are on cushy salaries, who likely have employers who’ll even cover con expenses. Spare a thought for those who save every penny for that $200 con ticket and keep your “wah, politics” hot takes to yourself.
If you don’t you’ll either look ridiculously out of touch, or you’ll get inundated with evidence demonstrating how our world is an unfair, non-egalitarian *political* hellscape. Not asking for direct action or ally status—just cease with the inane “tech is apolitical” takes.
If you disagree, I wish you the best of luck with your political project to surgically carve out a truly apolitical space within our otherwise political public sphere. :o)

And FWIW, if you don’t disagree but find a lot of this political stuff overwhelming: that’s totes fine. That’s how I feel trying to learn some new technology. It’s OK to be the “newbie”. It’s not OK to be the newbie that slags on stuff they’ve never faithfully tried to learn.
Being political is something good? What about white-supremacism hacking cons? I prefer neutral cons focused only in hacking, not in what it seens the Truth or the Good for someone.
Being ‘political’ is inescapable; what is true; what is good and what isn’t, are inherently political subjects. I’m ofc. not saying hacker cons should ‘just’ be about politics—I’m saying hacker cons have always been political, and will continue to be so. That’s it.
As I wrote this summer, yes has always been political, but used to be about political conversation, not "Antifa or gtfo" .
