In western countries I'm frequently told I have a close resemblance to Daniel Day Lewis. In the Near/Middle East people think I'm a Steve Jobs lookalike.

I have the opposite view. In my experience responsiveness many times comes at the expense of thoughtfulness. I prefer slower moving systems of engagement that encourage the latter.

3/ What’s really going on is that, precisely because deontology sets such inflexible moral standards, it’s an ideal weapon to deploy instrumentally in an argument against an opponent: pragmatic consequentialism for me, rigid deontology for thee.

Any of [Biden, Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg, Klobuchar, Bloomberg, etc.] can beat Trump. And any of them can lose to Trump. If you think otherwise, you're extremely overconfident about how much is knowable about any of this.

I will blindly support any policy that disincentivizes this brand of engagementbait.

It's annoying/funny when information and services explicitly targeted to tourists blatantly market themselves as NOT FOR TOURISTS. No need to be ashamed of our periodic tourist identities.

It’s possible that we’ll look back on employer-based healthcare and an overemphasis on the govt subsidizing homeownership as the linchpin of the American social safety net as the two big postwar domestic policy mistakes.

Chemistry query: Is there a reason that food purveyors haven't agreed on some standardized "spicy/capsaicinoid" metric informed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or some other method?

Instagram has been very kind to the neon sign industry. These days, it feels like a requirement for NYC F&B outfits.

On #3 and #4 I also think it's instructive to know where one *perceives* the current state of political arrangements in addition to their ideal preference.

The 4 broad (and somewhat overlapping) concepts I'm most curious about for understanding one's political personality. 1. "Just deserts" 2. In-group loyalty 3. Economic freedom (taxes, public goods, corporate regulation) 4. Personal freedom (drugs, abortion, gay marriage, guns)

Most of us agree that too much inequality is bad—but what kind of equality is good? In this week’s , I write about the philosophy of egalitarianism, which is full of puzzles, contradictions, and insights:

It's been interesting to observe the dramatic rise of escape rooms. It would have been difficult for me to imagine a relatively plain analog/bricks-and-mortar version of Myst being so popular. I'm curious how intricate, varied, and widespread this activity will become.

Sums up the go-to business model for an increasing number of bleeding-edge consumer tech outfits: "To get this middleman role right is an arduous task. It depends on selling consumers a product they must value enough to sign up for, but won’t fully use."

In tests of how much people will pay for privacy, the results differ tenfold based on how the choice is framed. Standard conclusion—people are irrational. Better explanation—people treat privacy as a human right, not a good to be traded, so these monetary values are meaningless.
