McConnell would’ve been on stronger ground if they had given Garland the courtesy of a hearing and a vote and then voted him down, which was perfectly within his right to do. Of course, a GOP Senate doesn’t *have* to confirm any D nominees for anything (and vice versa)https://twitter.com/StevenTDennis/status/1144323087321772033 …

McConnell tells @frankthorp he'd back confirmation of a Democratic president's Supreme Court pick during their "first year" in office. Says it would be "politically unsustainable" to block for year after year.

I actually think it was the evil genius of what he did not to even start the process. He knew that was more effective, didn't get into any analysis of the merits. Just no.

Yeah, of course. This old moderate white guy was a real threat to Rs, but he wouldn’t have sounded or looked like that. The partisanship was too bald. Recall that Obama called Hatch’s bluff, nominated exactly who Hatch suggested three weeks earlier.

He saved his swing state members from having to take that vote. And prevented Garland from being humanized.

Yes, he's counting on gerrymandering to hold on to the senate. Galaxy brain analysis there.

It was respectful of Garland- they didn't smear him, they didn't question his fitness. Nothing. The only reason was the reason- he would be an Obama appointee in the lame duck year so no choice would be considered.

McConnell very shrewdly wanted to make the 2016 election a referendum on the Supreme Court pick. In the end it was probably the deciding factor for many conservatives who held their noses to vote for Trump.
