It was respectful of Garland- they didn't smear him, they didn't question his fitness. Nothing. The only reason was the reason- he would be an Obama appointee in the lame duck year so no choice would be considered.

McConnell very shrewdly wanted to make the 2016 election a referendum on the Supreme Court pick. In the end it was probably the deciding factor for many conservatives who held their noses to vote for Trump.
