I'm increasingly viewing non-binaryness as more an expression of trauma and a desire to be understood as not a typical [insert birth sex here], and less to do about gender itself at all.

At least she’s honest about retreating into masculinity because it feels safer. As a straight woman who twice in my youth did exactly that, it was for the same reason, seeking a feeling of safety in part by wanting to become invisible that way.
