MIT has a lecture teaching people vim. This warms my heart, as most people think I'm crazy for using vim and not some fancy IDE.

A good thread highlighting the (enormous) barriers between cancer diagnosis improvement and actually saving lives. Thread is about blood tests but could equally apply to informatics interventions.

Not the only such game from this company. The cardiology one looks particularly ominous.

Speaking of gamification, I never thought they'd make a mobile game for GI procedures. Not sure I'd want my gastroenterologist so concerned with speed when messing around with my colon though.

Gamification may work on StackOverflow, but not so much on health Q&A websites. Having experts and paying them works best, basically going against most modern web trends. Biology is complicated, people: Google is often not your friend.

In retrospect, the "History Earned" signs all over town probably weren't the best choice of slogans.

Great point Kirk! Datasets like Thyme, i2b2, n2c2, etc., have lead to 100's of papers by other groups, including people from outside the clinical nlp world at top nlp venues. Methods proposals have nothing to do without the existence of good datasets for training and evaluation.

Data is a scientific multiplier: if a grant funded project develops a good dataset, dozens of papers from groups not funded by the grant will be the result. And yet NLM does not value data creation in its proposals, only methods (I've been told this directly). CC:

Sam's alternative hypothesis is something that cannot be overlooked. Observational structured clinical data is a distant proxy for what a doctor is already thinking. It makes sense that fancy learning models often fail to extract more signal from what little is there.

Lots going on in industry regarding speech recognition and conversational agents for the clinic. Pretty critical stuff for removing documentation burden.

CS job postings far outstrip the # of graduates. Meanwhile, the opposite case with bioscience may help explain the rise of biomedical informatics: many of our students are bioscience undergrads retraining for bio- or clinical-focused computing careers.

False. God is neither Republican nor Democrat. Neither conservative nor liberal. Neither American nor Iranian. If God is on anyone's side, God is on the side of the poor. "Trump Tells Evangelical Base: God Is 'on Our Side""

José y Maria, by Everett Patterson. God chose to enter humanity on the margins. So it is primarily on the margins that we must seek Christ today. Reflection here:
