Yes they can be and sometimes we have to distance ourselves from them in order to have peace and happiness. I prefer to call them difficult people rather than toxic.
Anytime you slip into a toxic addiction use the experience as a learning tool. Think about the things that led you to that point and what you could do to avoid them from happening the next time. Keep a diary and take notes if you must.
