Eat the landed gentry. Also make Election Day a state holiday.

I worry that if we do this, it will end up being like President's Day where white collar people get the day off and buy mattresses, and everyone in the service industry still has to go to work

The gulf between the levels homeowners vote vs renters (for many reasons) is under talked about when discussing why politicians make the decisions they make.

Esp. in regards to taxation, the idea that direct democracy is somehow skewing policy away from the preferences of the median voter has been pretty well debunked by political scientists over the years. I trust voters more than politicians. And after the vote to protect CA's Pumas, I have even more faith in the voters. It's unusual to live in SF and have so many ballot measures. I suppose some of them go differently than what the wealthy and powerful would prefer. C'est la vie

The ballot initiative was created in the 1920s as a way to temper the all consuming power of the railroad companies in Sacramento. Fast forward to 2018, it costs $3m to qualify and $30M to pass an initiative. It can only be used by those wealthy interests it was created to curb!
