@ByRosenberg did you write an explainer of why in God’s name Amazon thought it was a smart strategy to pull a stunt like this? What is the logic of this? What deal did they want?

Amazon is famously the only large-scale tech co that is "comfortable operating with low margins". They will fight points of margin tooth and nail and are very good at it. Apple does this with suppliers, but shields employee base. At Google, money just blows from the air vents.

In addition, Amazon clearly has a large-scale and long-term human resource planning effort spun up around HQ2 that involves trading off headcount in Seattle vs other locations. My guess is the head tax affected their model and they adjusted accordingly.
