Earthquake survivability standsrds are no greater for a skyscraper than for a bungalow. SF is looking into this via a "Tall Building Study." But, in 2007, developer pressure killed such a program. The current building code is designed to a life safety standard to protect occupant lives during an earthquake event. Newly constructed hsg built to life safety standards can still be significantly damaged during an earthquake while the structure is repaired or replaced. (ABAG)

l think we have an old housing stock in the region, and not all of them are required to be brought up to code unless there is a remodeling or they are softstory buildings, therefore, not all existing housing are up to code.
