Overheard someone talking about job security and it made me realize how much our society conditions us to derisk everything. To remove all uncertainties. To insure everything. But certainly is an illusion. Learning to live without it, or with less of it, is ultimate freedom.

Compared to other industrialized societies, the American system exposes its people to more risk, for better and for worse. That is why a single health crisis can send a family into bankruptcy or why housing is so precarious for the working class.

Or the chronically ill or disabled. Or simply working parents who need to take care of family. It’s really privilege to be able to take risks in your career.

The question isn't whether or not you can afford risks, but whether or not you can afford not to. No one said you had to quit your job to take a risk.
