there are lots of purposes to this kind of event. It's also a forcing function on the company itself to be institutionally able to have the right data at hand to answer these questions before the public. (Like a preparing for a board meeting on a different scale.)

That's very true; congress is out of touch. Also; if Facebook, VCs and the rest of the ecosystem in Silicon Valley understood itself, Zuckerberg wouldn't expand like an Amoeba in Menlo park and Fremont.
