Yes but not. It is a long term aid, not an immediate aid. Like telling someone with a broken arm to give up smoking for their health.

So, your problem is that supporting the building of housing now does not immediately help specific individuals who are getting evicted in the near term?

Yes. It looks like this is the conversation: YIMBY: "We should build more." Tenants: "But then we get evicted in the short term." YIMBY: "But in a decade you won't get evicted." Tenants: "But we're getting evicted now!" YIMBY: "But we need to stop evictions later!" (repeat)

In a SUPER simplistic way, this tweet and lines from @EskSF explain mods and progs. https://www.modernluxury.com/san-francisco/story/the-gangs-of-city-hall …pic.twitter.com/WzdXUQMbIh

That's pretty spot on. I'd add that's largely because moderates tend to be newcomers, though not always, and progressives tend to be a coalition of long-time San Franciscans, though not always. That explains the weird progressive coalition with West Side groups.

I’d agree with that. I also think that’s part of the reason Progs have a been less friendly to market rate housing. Allowing more people to live in SF gives more power to Mods because that’s how non-natives tend to vote (generally).

not trying to hijack this conversation here but... i really wish SF mayoral race polls would release their cross tabs. Would love to see data backing this up. I’ve been polled several times and always get asked how long I’ve lived here.

There is a real paucity of publicly available info about polling data about SF elections. I think largely because few news orgs are able to commission polling here. Its all leaked private campaign polling. Bay Citizen did one back in 2011.

Media outlets no longer have the money/are willing to pay for polling. Frankly, polls we know very little about have been bandied about irresponsibly in the press. There was a time when internal polls — with unknown questions and question sequences — were simply not reported on.

Stanford as a private institution also has an inherent ideological lens. (Just saying.)

I think as long as the polling is done by a reputable pollster and the cross tabs are released, that wouldn’t really be a problem. Good pollsters won’t put their name on crap.

Like polls from endorsing organizations and campaigns are a little sketchier. But I would trust a poll commissioned by Stanford!

Polling is very expensive. And time consuming. I’m involved with my colleague’s polling institute here at SF State. She works so hard to keep it going and make it educational.
