My version of utopia is out of reach as well, but at least I’m realistic about it and the constraints we work with, so I advocate for less government. More government means they never go away, and usually fail miserably, or give a self selecting power hungry group more control.

Lack of government does not mean some entity is not controlling you. Atrophy of public governance can lead to private, unaccountable governance by other entities, which also hoard power and never go away.

I don’t want a lack of government. I want an efficient and lean government with transparency and one in which I have a voice in how my tax dollars are spent. Once you take what is absolutely necessary, why can’t I give the rest to something I really care about?

Even you must admit most people aren’t like you. Smart people like you aren’t really running for office or aren’t for the right reasons. So, back to my self selection issue. The incentives for public work are not well aligned with people who can do amazing things.

Totally a self-selection problem. Running for office is totally different than governing. Like the difference between a seed stage CEOs job and running a public company.

Govt used to attract higher quality talent before Reagan and others started publicly deriding it and intentionally undermining its resources. Or before Nixon caused a loss of faith.

That said, I’ve met a lot of talented people in the “deep state” of govt working behind the scenes policy jobs. The issue is that creating “good” policy is only one small pt of the process. The real problem is selling it and building consensus around it.
