Creates incentives for SRO owners to evict low-income tenants. Prior owner of Starcity's Mason project forced long-term low-income tenants to leave through neglect in 2012, building has been vacant since, many former tenants are homeless or dead. This history matters!

I agree history matters. Was StarCity around in 2012 as incentive for the then-land owner? Seems like you just proved the opposite of the point you were trying to make?

It was not. Alexandra is a community organizer in the Tenderloin. I think she is concerned that if SRO owners know they can turn over their properties to do this, then they will just have a financial incentive to let their buildings sit empty for years.

This is why higher income SROs should be NEW and not displace existing tenants! There’s plenty of room including many parking lots right there in the TL.

Also, statewide right of return as in SB 827 could help things

That makes sense and is obv an issue but sounds like it wasn’t the case for Mason since StarCity didn’t exist. Does anyone know what incentivized that landlord? We’re there other developers looking at the property that may have encouraged them to evict? Asking to learn, thanks

according to court docs I've seen, they wanted to convert to tourist and student housing, both more lucrative (obvi) than housing extremely low income people
