      Kim-Mai Cutler Retweeted Brad Parscale

I can’t believe this tweet isn’t going viral. Do people not really care that Facebook may have systematically charged the Clinton campaign an order of magnitude or two more than it was charging Trump to reach American voters? (Which is not allowed in other mediums by law.)https://twitter.com/parscale/status/967516077956755457 …

I bet we were 100x to 200x her. We had CPMs that were pennies in some cases. This is why @realDonaldTrump was a perfect candidate for FaceBook.

Uh, no. Trump’s ads got shared so they reached more people. Clinton could have made her ads better. Also, targeting different demos costs vastly different $. Saying she got charged more is pretty misleading

There is evidence that her campaign simply did not put in the same level of effort into the FB platform. But also we don’t have access to the data to give us a clearer picture of how much it is on the campaign versus whether there is something more structurally unsavory like

Having spent $40M there, I’d love more data from them myself! But this is the *nature* of ads on FB or google which factor in engagement. Expertise in running campaigns *should* give you a massive multiplier on effectiveness

In a private sector context where you’re acquiring customers, this makes sense. But in a public or good governance context, you’re giving engaging or inflammatory (or outright false) paid messaging a significant cost advantage when reaching voters.

...just like you would with a viral email for donations. Or a TV ad that gets picked up on late night TV. Or a poster by Shepard Fairey that everyone downloads. Good marketing is cheaper by dint of being good marketing.

You are thinking with your CEO hat on, not a citizen-in-fragile-democracy hat on. There are norms in other mediums for offering candidates the same rate. https://www.fcc.gov/media/policy/statutes-and-rules-candidate-appearances-advertising … Facebook deliberately weaseled its way out of applying these to its platform.pic.twitter.com/lA6ek4kPWI

I don’t think you can copy and paste TV policies to social networking obviously. But there should be *some* standard.

I think there should be greater transparency. But I think it’s ok, and in fact necessary, for a better campaign with a worse candidate to win. If one candidate refused to go negative in other media and lost, wed call them a principled loser & be done with it

They don’t charge a flat rate. Both candidates had the same tools and could’ve earned the same rate. Also, tv ads in different markets cost different amounts - do blue state tv ads cost as much as red state tv ads? No.
