I can’t believe this tweet isn’t going viral. Do people not really care that Facebook may have systematically charged the Clinton campaign an order of magnitude or two more than it was charging Trump to reach American voters? (Which is not allowed in other mediums by law.)https://twitter.com/parscale/status/967516077956755457 …

I bet we were 100x to 200x her. We had CPMs that were pennies in some cases. This is why @realDonaldTrump was a perfect candidate for FaceBook.

Facebook adverts are cheaper per impression if the ads get a lot of clicks. All this shows is that Trump troll ads got more clicks than Hillary ads. I can believe that, because Hillary's content was usually worthy-but-dull, whereas Trump troll content was scandal-y.

Yes but if the main media system that 2B people use structurally favors extremist messaging at a price differential that is unprecedented in media history, isn’t that a matter of public concern?

Yes, it is a matter of public concern, but it is not all that different to dozens of other media channels (including the NY Times) that spread Trump campaign memes *for free*. Trump is a virus that exploited the US media's desire for messy drama.

Editorial content is governed by a whole different set of laws, norms than paid content/advertising is and paid content is *very* meaningful in the context of political campaigns. (And no, I’m not a fan of how 24-7 cable media has affected discourse).

I'm wondering if it amounts to an in-kind contribution from FB to the Trump campaign.

Also the truth in advertising standard to prevent ads that are plainly false or misleading doesn’t apply at all, as it does for Consumer Products ads. Political ads are exempt from that. Clicks rule.

It is concerning. But was the cause a function of clickbait or bots flooding any mention of Clinton with awful content that drive pro Clinton groups private, thus restricting the reach of the content?

Very much so! And must become a very hard part of the social discourse going forward because the algorithm rewards course behavior that includes personal attacks, lies, slander, trickery, disinformation, and anti-Americanism. All very destructive to our peaceful social democracy
