Why does aiming to have what other industrialized countries have in terms of health care access and modern mass transit infrastructure make California the “far left fringe” of American politics?https://twitter.com/PostScottWilson/status/960320990340362243 …

A halftime palate cleanser (read it with Timberlake in the background.) If you think California is at the liberal edge now, just wait for the November elections. California has the highest level of poverty among the 50 states when the cost of living is factored in. What is being done to reduce that? https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2017/demo/p60-261.html …

On healthcare, many of the solutions involve unsustainable spending if they don't adjust for the supply-reducing factors that drive up healthcare costs compared to other industrialized countries. (Pharma price measures are an exception to this)https://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/15/how-much-do-doctors-in-other-countries-make/ …

Yeah, I agree. Doesn't mean that universal health care access shouldn't be a stated goal. I think it was clear to everyone involved in Sacramento that what was proposed last year wasn't serious. But maybe it could come back in future years in a more thought out form.

CA is not the far left fringe, it is the leading edge of the US. We're always years ahead of the rest of the nation.

CA politics often better understood through a populist, rather than a left-right lens. That’s how we have NIMBYs who also care so much about “reducing poverty”. It’s why we like to spend a lot, but somehow get others to pay the taxes.
