      Self-driving cars will not address the fact that we have a limited number of bridges in the Bay Area, which have limited capacity and would face an induced demand problem should AVs reduce fares/cost.

          But AVs would also increase capacity. There’d be a new equilibrium point at higher volumes. Dynamic real-time road pricing adds another variable, as does having more than one person per vehicle

          Do you think that a shared AV model that reduces or even practically eliminates barriers to widespread, impromptu ride sharing could potentially reduce traffic congestion? Given the sheer number of SOVs, even a relatively small increase in carpooling could be impactful.

          Moving hundreds of thousands of people per day to go sit at a desk in front of a PC is not the answer, regardless of method. Better remote working tools are infinitely more feasible than more infrastructure or self driving cars/planes.

          I’m worried that people think AVs are the answer to traffic. Are the 880 and 101 and Bay Area bridges going to be less of a parking lot with fewer accidents because of autonomous vehicles?

          Theoretically you can have much higher traffic density if everything is AV - narrower lanes and less following distance is needed. But we are years from that being a reality.

          Kim, great comments. Just to add to it, we believe a major blind spot for western economies is the needed integration (physical, data, payment, etc) of different modes of transport public & private. That’s why we advocate for open data to provide users with seamless options
