Some of the Russian immigrants I know refer to a lot of the Peninsula (million dollar) houses as “barns” - wood construction, flimsy looking, a little worn down, not for urban living.

Yeah, from within Europe (which deforested in the 11th century), wooden buildings in urban areas look strange.

Whereas ppl from Europe and the ME tend to arrive in NY, see JFK and Penn Station, and begin to associate the US with “backward charm” and the frisson of urban drama that are increasingly rare in their own countries.
