"There are 2 groups of Asians in Silicon Valley, Asian-Americans & Asian-Asians. Asian-Americans are the most visible; they found companies, write blog posts, sit on panels & weigh in on debates around diversity. Asian-Asians are the dark matter of tech." https://www.facebook.com/xianhang/posts/10100291984325061?pnref=story …

Also important to note that 1st gen workers are the ones most likely to be on a visa status that leaves them probe to exploitation.

While American journalists fixate on the dumb, clickbaity raw water stories, this is one of the best stories I've read on tech & Silicon Valley culture in the last few years or so.http://www.addastories.org/welcome-to-the-bay-area/ …

It's revealing that this story was written by an Indian journalist *who flew here from India*.

exactly. She knew the details. The languages, the subtle segregation between different ethnic communities, the Whatsapp groups, the specific restaurants.

(Although I do think an ABCD journo would have caught that too.)

the one woman quoted on gender issues is interesting though. I wonder if there would be a marked difference between the way first and second-generation women would perceive sexism in the industry.

It’s night and day. 1st gen are often happy just to be less at risk of (e.g.) street harassment. 2nd gen are fluent in the overall battle being fought, and have the security of place to step up about it.

As someone living the tech life at ground zero here in SilliValley, what
@anildash says about the two generations rings true: 1st gen: just happy to be here. Completely insulated in their own bubble. 2nd gen: see the big picture but also have a safety net. Much more activism.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
I dunno if it's fair to say which group really knows what the "big picture" is or not. I don't know what it is for Indian-Americans & tech cos based in India, but I doubt ABCs would ever be allowed to have more than a token role in a mainland Chinese tech company.

Yes, admittedly I overgeneralize. There are 1st gen tech activists, just proportionately fewer. Also, interesting point re 2nd gen IndianAms in Indian companies in India. Not sure. Most such folks I know worked at multinationals.
