"There are 2 groups of Asians in Silicon Valley, Asian-Americans & Asian-Asians. Asian-Americans are the most visible; they found companies, write blog posts, sit on panels & weigh in on debates around diversity. Asian-Asians are the dark matter of tech." https://www.facebook.com/xianhang/posts/10100291984325061?pnref=story …

RT-ing this does not mean I fully agree with all of this. I just grew up in a majority Asian-American community in Silicon Valley and think that the tensions between first- and second-generation Asian-Americans is largely unexplored by mainstream media.

Nit: Can we do better than "Asian"? Nonsensical, confusing, homogenizing. What better vocab exists for distinguishing South/East/Southeast/Central Asian cultures.

Yeah, I don't know. I try to shift between East Asian and South Asian, but it's still weird.

Same thing exists in Vancouver. Asian-Canadians (many of them here 100+ years) have an uneasy relation with the Chinese nouveau riche who are making a large footprint here

I think the larger companies will try to shift people to Canada instead. Amazon and Facebook are opening huge new buildings in Vancouver to house around 2000 workers. Games industry in Montreal has been ramping up for the last decade, surpassing Van

i think there should be more discussion around the immigrant experience in general -- it's very diverse and nuanced and lots of assumptions are made about many of us, esp around identity
