What’s a little trolling among friends? I’m still waiting to hear what my summary got wrong.https://twitter.com/graue/status/948109017460568064?ref_src=twcamp%5Eshare%7Ctwsrc%5Em5%7Ctwgr%5Eemail%7Ctwcon%5E7046%7Ctwterm%5E3 …
Scott Feeney added,
I already sent a ton of research on the ripple effect on land values and racial displacement when you build stuff in communities of color that is "affordable" only to ppl who are affluent and mostly white. Beyond restating all that hard evidence I don't have a ton to add
I guess read up on what's happening in East New York, where even the inclusionary units being planned are at a too-high AMI threshold for most residents.
Oh and this, from the neighborhood where I used to work:http://apps.bostonglobe.com/spotlight/boston-racism-image-reality/series/seaport/ …
Actually one more side note: Seaport was built on a ton of empty lots and industrial space; the residential towers there are 20-30 stories. A relatively clean slate and yet STILL it was planned and built by and for rich, almost entirely white people.
Thanks for the links. I do plan to read Zoned Out and have brought up your points in several convos with YIMBYs. The point I’m making is against status quo bias basically. Having a single family housing stock and zoning isn’t stopping speculation, displacement, gentrification
You can go to any open house in Bayview and see how the prices are based on option value to remodel it into a luxury home. Given that, shouldn’t the question not be *whether* to upzone but *how* we do it?
Yup! The problem is that cities from SF to Atlanta to Boston repeatedly fail to upzone without whitewashing & richwashing everything they touch (hello, "creative class"!). That's the crux of what a good socialist housing scheme aims to fix: public housing, public land.
Public housing had broader political support when it was for white middle class families in the 1930s. When the demographics of public housing changed, that’s when political will fell apart for it. No particular system is immune from the insidiousness of racism.
Nor is for-profit development of market rate housing. (But yes, building a base for public housing is obviously going to require sustained political effort and organizing, isn't that what we're all doing here anyway?)
what's happening in the Bayview is exactly what happened in the eastern Mission during the aughts with prices on the SFH stock getting to luxury levels. at least we're getting some BMR these days.
