It's my strong impression that I had a lot more interesting, novel, challenging, thought-provoking, difficult conversations in SF 10-20 years ago too. But I draw the opposite conclusion @sama does as to why they have tapered off.

The people I know leaving SF for non-economic reasons are doing so to leave the overbearing tech dynamic that feels sterile and soul-sucking in many ways. FWIW I agree with
