I would say that that is a contributing factor. I'm sympathetic to the argument too but it's sort of odd in other contexts. Minimum wage workers buy used cars, but no one freaks out that we're not building new cars for poor people.

Cars do not include the cost of the underlying land (which is structured as the primary major wealth accumulation method in America), and also they can be imported from abroad.
