        I imagine that must be true for LA too, the Red Cars has thousands of miles of track. Maybe the NY Times doesn’t consider LA a major city.

        It's the best transit system in the country, but not because of the work the city is currently doing. We just inherited the awesome decisions of leaders from over a century ago. It's actually pretty similar to BART, and I'm sure lots of other systems throughout the country.

        Maybe this applies to subways only but it’s definitely not true for rail in general. Most cities that ripped out streetcars (LA, Philly, DC, etc) are in this position.

        a 50s bus really is an improvement over a 50s mixed-traffic streetcar so makes sense to not count the latter
