I think the concern here is that a change in degree is a change in kind. This is ultra-personalized, ultra-targeted, highly scalable and opaque -- even to its creators.

there is an increasing body of academic research; challenge is data access. it's much easier on Twitter; FB is closed. i have a pretty long link library, thinking it might be useful to start tweeting a "daily disinfo" article from the academic collection (vs press coverage).
