As home prices have risen (esp in big cities), this deduction has become less significant. It's slowly inflating itself away.

It's pretty significant. Like $20K/yr for the median home in SF.

How could the government end the mortgage interest deduction in a way that doesn't instantly screw non-rich homeowners?

Phase out super slowly? Make sure the proceeds are reallocated toward vouchers, lower-income households?

Still bad but I don't think it's on the same level as prop 13 or the basic difficulty to build new housing in major cities.
