I'd love to know a little more about how the state made the decision regarding rideshare wages. Specifically, was it on a state-level ballot? Who did we vote for that pushed this through? Why does it feel surprising? I am really disappointed considering everything else going on

What does this mean: "labor walked away?"
-
Probably that the union / collective bargaining group on behalf of the workers (Labor) stopped negotiating and instead waited for it to work its way through the courts.

This is probably just CA politics as usual, but AB5 also carved out exceptions for 50+ professions like doctors, lawyers, and anyone else with enough lobbying power in Sacramento. As a result, it disproportionately impacted freelancers and professions without built-in soapboxes.

Lorena’s big mistake was fucking with freelance journalists with the 30 article/year cap. When you have to immediately scramble to amend your own law it’s a bad law. We should just repeal it and work toward a third classification that reflects the new reality of work.
