Assisted living for seniors in the inner Bay Area starts at around ~$5,000 per month. But instead, a HELOC and an ADU can provide a safer living situation at ~$1,000 per month if you put a granny flat in your backyard thanks to #AB68.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-08-11/to-escape-covid-19-grandma-s-living-in-the-backyard …

I might do this exact thing for my parents. Though....they do like the idea of senior living communities.

I am a big fan of accessory dwelling units but they sure are tough to have in some cities/towns due to zoning and reg

Whew, this might hopefully be a long term trend, along with outdoor office pods.

To which I ask, "What backyard?" More seriously, though: I have found that it's helpful to remind people that "granny flat" and "mother-in-law unit" aren't just charming names for these spaces. They really may be your family's best option for housing your parents in later life.

And on a more personal note: My mom's one request for later life (before she was sick) was to live in a "little house in your backyard." Wish that could have been an option for us financially in San Francisco – especially during the earlier stages of her illness.
