I might do this exact thing for my parents. Though....they do like the idea of senior living communities.

To which I ask, "What backyard?" More seriously, though: I have found that it's helpful to remind people that "granny flat" and "mother-in-law unit" aren't just charming names for these spaces. They really may be your family's best option for housing your parents in later life.

And on a more personal note: My mom's one request for later life (before she was sick) was to live in a "little house in your backyard." Wish that could have been an option for us financially in San Francisco – especially during the earlier stages of her illness.
