Oakland is far more ethnically diverse than Berkeley, was where UC was founded, has far more restaurants than Berkeley, has a downtown with 18 million square feet of office space, has a huge lake next to downtown, an international airport, a world class seaport, a fantastic zoo.

Didn’t say anything about Oakland. Thought you were genuinely asking what Berkeley was like, but now I see you just wanted to bash it. You seem very combative. It’s not a contest. (And btw I lived in Oakland for 3 years, and enjoyed it very much. I have never lived in Berkeley.)

I was just responding to those who were claiming that Berkeley is a suburb of San Francisco while pretending a city of nearly 4x the population of Berkeley, which borders Berkeley, is irrelevant and doesn’t exist. My point is that Berkeley is a suburb of Oakland, not of SF.

Not how it comes across, just FYI. For example, that Oakland has diverse cuisine doesn’t mean Berkeley DOESN’T have diverse cuisine. Heck, even Concord has fairly diverse cuisine. I was answering a question, you were picking a fight. Didn’t know.

Didn’t mean to come across that way. I wasn’t trying to dis Berkeley, just sticking up for Oakland.

All right then, noted. I would too if I felt someone was insulting it, as I very much enjoyed living there. I guess I read it differently.

They were indirectly insulting Oakland. They are so dismissive of Oakland that I don’t think they even realized they were insulting Oakland.

I reread the article, and it seems the fuss began when somebody said “suburbs of Berkeley.” I guess I’m just mystified as to how that’s insulting Oakland. The person at the beginning of the article just happens to live in Berkeley. That’s all.

No, others were implying that Berkeley was really a suburb of San Francisco and therefore couldn’t possibly have suburbs of its own. It was a mix of SF and Berkeley elitists claiming a relationship while ignoring Oakland’s position in the region.

Didn’t see that. But if you’re determined to be offended, you’ll find what you hope to find. It doesn’t seem to be Oakland has been deliberately ignored, they were simply mis-labeling Berkeley.

I love... both Oakland and Berkeley?

Me too but that has little to do with arguments about what is and isn’t a suburb to which city.
