I am still a skeptic on this. There are lots of organizations where you don’t need people in the office on any particular day, but having had some office time together is important for culture and productivity. Eventually that will need to be refreshed.https://twitter.com/DKThomp/status/1288105494540947456 …

Via the @mattyglesias newsletter, I think this is a good way to think about the geographical effects of big companies embracing remote work. Zoom weakens the historical spatial connection between job and home, meaning more families can move for lifestyle and keep their jobs. pic.twitter.com/ENDGmCFCbr

I think this could probably be accomplished with a flyins throughout the year and then maybe a several week "camp" at some point. Thinking of academia as a model these sessions are enormously valuable for making connections but the saturation curve is steep. A few weeks is enough

When I was at Slate we were split between two offices and lots of remote people and did a once-a-year retreat to a weird resort in the Borscht Belt to achieve this.

I think writing, which has more of an independent contributor culture, is different than, say, product management. Like I *believe* remote can happen and will work for some exceptional ICs but for people who want to go into management or work pre-P-M fit, jury is out for me.

based on my exp working remote for last 2.5 years imho, it works fine, but it does select for self starting, experienced people. the only obvious lacuna in the experience in my org is how to properly level up juniors or those less comfortable self advocating.

people weren't reading these remote announcements very carefully. FB's offer was clearly initially directed at senior engineers, but junior people would still have to come into the office.

pre-pmf, I agree is not decided yet. There's real value there (esp in areas other than dev-tools/remote-tools). management I think will go hybrid/remote just fine. Thinking time and greater emphasis on writing is a net win here.
