What pains me about the “NYC is done” & “leaving SF forever” crowd isn’t that they’re leaving (I get it) but the attitude that the city was something to take & now that it faces adversity, they’re gone. Cities are not products you consume—they require participation & investment.

This (very good) framing reminds me of
@zachklein's a few months ago. There are lots of us who feel this way, too – and who have more complicated feelings about moving away that don't as easily fit into a tweet.https://twitter.com/zachklein/status/1260585864276500481 …Libby Brittain added,
Zach KleinVerified account @zachkleinMore often than not eulogies about cities (eg Why I Left...) have the tone of a consumer disappointed with a product. As though the city is their gym and the rowing machine wasn’t routinely wiped down. Rarely does the writer describe their effort to become civically involved.Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 40 likes -

Totally! I think COVID also accelerated a lot folks future plans. They don't *want* to leave but it makes too much sense not to (e.g. family who was already thinking of leaving due to costs, etc).

Definitely. I never really shared why, how, or even that I decided to move away from San Francisco on the internet. I've dipped my toe in since (below), but maybe now would be a good time to contribute something more thoughtful about it.https://twitter.com/libbybrittain/status/1263883926696718336 …

Relatedly, I also think it's interesting to take people seriously on their having a mercenary (?) interest in their neighborhoods or cities. We may think it's damaging or even wrong, but: How did they arrive there? What messages did they get and from who?

these cities don't want people to stay. They want the tax revenue, they want the high property values, they don't want to build the homes, the political parties and vested interests that exist don't want to permanently alter the electorate in a way that diminishes their power.
