It's one of the only options available now that Amendment 4 is being held hostage between court rulings. W/o philanthropic effort to cover fines and fees, the real losers will be returning citizens whose rights are being, as you say, held hostage. It's gotta be this + litigation.

Is there still a path for litigation after SCOTUS?

They already didn’t have the right to vote. The new law reinstated the vote for people who have completed their restitution. In Florida, sentences are not discharged until fines are paid. The new law was then clarified to match the existing laws.

Giving ex-felons a right they previously forfeited is NOT disenfranchisement. We CAN do a LOT better at using tech to help them track these fines, and connecting them with donors that want to help pay them. You CAN combine both adherence to the law AND a path out.

I mean I wouldnt qualify it as "Feel good" but I am at least glad to hear that he's going to help the people who are being extorted. That doesnt make the extortion any less repugnant...

It’s a feel good story in that he’s personally rectifying an injustice to ensure a positive outcome. Not so good that it’s required in the first place.
