Feels like a motte and bailey. Being against cancel culture doesn’t have to have any relation to whether you want prison/police reform.
The demonstrations were about police reform. Then the NYT ran an op-ed urging the government to send in the military against protesters who wanted police reform. Then the editor, who hadn’t read the piece in the first place, resigned.
If that’s your summary of critiques of cancel culture, you’re still straw manning. Best critiques of cancel culture I’ve seen come from people who also want some radical justice reform. Rarely in the same method, though.
