Just for perspective, our HUD point-in-time count last year reported there were 567,000 people nationally experiencing homelessness. We’re looking at a 50X increase without a national eviction moratorium plus an extension of CARES to prevent layoffs.https://twitter.com/CNBC/status/1281618139185328130 …

you (ok the sloppy CNBC tweet) are off by factor of 125x here. Article says evictions/foreclosures could increase by 28M, but homelessness by 40% (from Brendan O’Flaherty’s study btw). Let’s see if you correct or note, as this is a clear reporting error.https://twitter.com/kimmaicutler/status/1282486197558710273?s=21 …

My greatest fear: that the new normal means a U.S. homeless population of 20 million children & adults. That’s where we are headed if this ostrich syndrome doesn’t end now. We are weeks away from the end of every #eviction moratorium & unemployment insurance w/ no relief in sight

yes, she's mentioning 20M+ evictions, which perhaps you could call a type of "homeless", but a moment's reflection, or considering the O'Flaherty actual study on homelessness rate prediction in the article linked, tell you that evictions don't equal homelessness in normal sense.

btw, not that I don't agree there's a mass crisis looming. I am largely focused right now on concrete actions to rapidly expand immediate shelter and rapid new housing options in Portland, to respond: #pdxshelterforum @PDXshelterforumhttps://twitter.com/tmccormick/status/1276115494467039232?s=20 …

it's a little complicated since a lot of the typical means -- couchsurfing or cramming in with family or friends isn't as conveniently available in a pandemic because of exposure risk.

yes, that’s another factor. Though I wonder by what % people would go or let friends/family go unsheltered rather than let them couchsurf or double up? If it’s significant at all, a sad measure of low social capital and hospitality in our culture.

On the plus side, fewer people driving about, much willingness to rethink use of street & other public space.. one might almost think of taking public parking and turning it into #parklets OR WAIT a housing-use version.. Hous.. @Houslets? 🤔😉 I mean, a guy can dream, right?
