Not incompatible. The best explanations (journalism included) come from an expert with good communication skills. Some fields have no “practitioners” (eg 15th century history) or ad hoc so journalists/academics naturally most expert. But for fields with massive practictioners...
And this is the problem and opportunity. There are tons of doctors, lawyers, engineers, police, firefighters, IRS agents, professional surfers, you name it! — practictioner-experts in so many subjects who are better journalists due to their expertness...and who can communicate!
No one is saying no to good journalism either. Citizen journalism is how we keep bad journalists accountable.
