Conor is a world-class Jerry quoter.
Jerry consistently offers world-class lines.
I'll admit I miss it
What I liked best about him is that unlike almost every other government official, he treated the economy as a factor he had to live with but couldn't control, even going so far as to advertise his lack of control. Most officials take credit in good times and deflect in bad.
this is true, but some have also faulted him for what they see as excessive fatalism that minimized the effect of policy solutions, like on housing
His fatalism on housing – which is the thing I've ever interviewed him about – wasn't fatalism of policy, but fatalism about Democracy, meaning he didn't think people wanted or could stomach what it would take to solve the problem. Hard to disagree with him there.
FWIW, after Jerry gave that "we're not solving anything" speech when signing the housing package, I asked a bunch of electeds and activists to respond, and like nobody wanted to
"What problems do you think you are creating today that will have to be solved in a generation?" "I'm going to pretend not to understand you."
