Although it's phenomenal, some open-source software projects are absolutely brutal for startups. I'm a big fan of Roam, but before they can even develop a great product there are 3+ open source projects copying the core idea and providing it for free. Software is commoditizing.

There's Athens and Foam, to name two. And to be clear, neither of them are "ready" just yet. Arguably they're even better in some ways, since they work off your local computer. Bad for mobile, great for privacy.
