They're worried about losing their jobs, as are many. Understandable since groups are explicitly attacking people for their opinions and succeeding in getting them fired. Whether that's legal/"allowed" or not, we should consider whether it's a desirable cultural environment.

1/ One of the most impactful opportunities for courage is upholding a broad principle (a "rule of the game"), even when this specific instance seems to go against your "team". The sports analogy is apt. Do you really want refs who bend the rules, as long as it's in your favor?
