Bay Area rents in SF and the peninsula may be down by double-digits YOY but home prices hit a new high. Thanks.... @federalreserve? cc @anthemospic.twitter.com/nrzHuB1QkE

Some other notes: "Condo markets were typically significantly weaker than house markets, seeing declines in both sales activity and in median sales prices. The SF median condo price at $1,195,000 in Q2 2020 was 4% lower than Q2 2019 ($1,250,000)."

The markets which saw the largest YOY increases in the # of listings accepting offers in June 2020 were the 4 outer Bay Area counties of Monterey (61% YOY increase), Santa Cruz (58%), Sonoma (47%) & Napa (37%). They also have among the lowest population densities in the Bay Area.

Winners & losers from today's WFH announcement: 🔺Bay Area renters 🔺Startups that want a presence in the Bay 🔺Parents/mid-career (esp. moms!) that want WFH 🔺POC that want to work from diverse cities 🔺Budgets of second-tier US cities 🔺Property owners in Santa Cruz, Napa, etc

You told us working parents, especially moms, would be winners. As a working parent I have a very hard time believing that we are winning in this situation

in the short-term, I agree. Without childcare in a pandemic, it's brutal. But medium/long-term, WFH (assuming schools come back, which I think they will), is probably net good for parents. Virtual becomes more culturally accepted as a substitute for in-person face time.

That’s a big assumption! Schools won’t be going back to normal anytime soon, at least here in San Mateo county! In the meantime parents are essentially being asked to choose their jobs or their kids. It could be a lot longer haul

my comments about WFH are over like 5-10 yr+ timeline, not 1-2 years.

Not sure this can happen if 50%+ of child care facilities close and don't reopen.https://hechingerreport.org/without-more-federal-funds-half-of-all-child-care-centers-could-close-forever/ …

yeah I think this is one prognostication Kim may regret. The other ones seem spot on. Though it doesn't take a rocket scientist or a geospatial geek to figure out people will flee cities in a pandemic.
