People love to conflate "getting cancelled" with "getting argued with."
Just because you get some pushback on something you said or did, doesn't mean you're "cancelled"

Totally. One interesting theory of behavior is we seek to reduce the difference between our model of the world and our sensory input. Sometimes that means updating our models, other times it means acting in ways that gives us evidence our models are true.

A focus on, a disproportionate fear of, cancel culture, or an outspoken defense of one's apparently flawed past work (especially if the work was marred by illegal, creepy or bigoted actions) can be preemptive defense, an attempt to discredit any future revealing testimony.
