Journalists: taking personal Instagram story screenshots and recording Clubhouse conversations without consent and tweeting about it to 150,000 people. Also journalists:pic.twitter.com/PLMb0CR56f

I doubt a journalist recorded that conversation. Was likely an listener/industry insider who leaked it.

Genuinely curious: Scenario #1: journalist records a conversation between 3rd parties in an invite-only non-public app and publishes the conversation without consent Scenario #2 Same as above but it’s a non-journalist who records but journalist publishes Is #1 OK? Is #2 OK?

In Scenario #1, journalist would probably ask for permission and get a Y/N answer and decide whether to participate or proceed from there but would not violate the ask and secretly record.

Scenario #2 is complicated and is the subject of never ending discussion. https://niemanreports.org/articles/the-ethics-of-leaks/ … But in this case, there were hundreds and hundreds of listeners and people were talking about it online so hard to have a bulletproof expectation of privacy.

“Complicated” seems like a way to justify an action because of a personal preference, not a rigorous moral or ethical code.

Did Vice get permission from the speakers in the Clubhouse recording they published?

No they’d ask Clubhouse if they could record and Clubhouse would give a Y/N.
