Lots of reporters I know *do* those unsexy stories but few people read them because they're getting their news via headlines in a social media feed now instead of cracking open a newspaper or magazine.

If you read the print NYT it's still mostly old-school, objective-style reporting. But those aren't the ones that go viral on Facebook and Twitter so we get a skewed picture of what these publications are really about.

The click environment? Not all publications have this issue... And agree - I think most ppl who go into journalism aren’t there to maximize monetization

I would say the NYT as an org is more polarizing than ever & is certainly incentivized to be polarizing & drive clicks. That’s just how their biz works.
Frankly that’s a higher level problem for the country.
