I think it’s a failure of imagination on how the private and public sectors interact over the last generation. There’s this false binary between 100% deregulate + privatize or 100% socialize, govt programs...

And then also a devolution of power to the local level as Congress/Federal becomes more intractable that makes it hard capture new markets bc you have to go city by city or state by state rather than having transparent national norms

And also the transition from a small set of "startup" finance vehicles into a large, formalized class of capital... More LP stakeholders who are sold and expect a more predictable return. There's way less incentive for risk taking in most VC partnerships.

also depends on what the govt spends public $ on. If the govt offers big contracts for border surveillance, the private sector will fund unicorns there.
