To untangle philanthropy one has to tease out the difference between grants and advocacy. The big expense in philanthropy was "overhead." A 501 is seeded with assets then the biggest expense is often advocacy—people telling others about the problem. And grants go to that too.

Advocacy is really important and can be high-leverage if done correctly. If you can support an org at a few hundred grand to a few million a year and they eventually get a policy passed that unlocks billions of dollars in economic opportunity or human potential.....
