I think a lot of people burning things in the middle of a dual pandemic and depression think it’s all going to spring back up suddenly after it’s done. But insurance may not pay for it, many of these venues may not ever get rebuilt, many of these cities will see people leave.

Consider three values: x = the economic losses due to the pandemic/lockdown y = the economic losses from property damage during riots the last few days z = the eventual payouts from city budgets to settle civil suits due to police violence over the last few days

Do you think y is even close to 1% of x? Do you think y>z? You honestly sound like a very sad scared lonely grandmother with early stage dementia who has watched thousands of hours of Fox News.

      > y = the economic losses from property damage during riots the last few days Stewart, it’s not just the cost of a few days of destruction (as bad as that is). It’s a generational reduction in wealth for black communities. NBER, not Fox. https://www.nber.org/papers/w10493 pic.twitter.com/LSh5ueS8Kx

this ignores a) how black communities have been displaced from inner cities for decades and b) that these protests are far more racially diverse than the ones of 50 years ago.https://twitter.com/TomSugrue/status/1267175127483105281 …

Do you (@balajis) think the property damage is so great that folks ought to just swallow their frustration for the better good? i.e. riots so bad, just hold tight until you can vote in November? Or did you have some alternate proposal for those who feel boxed in?

I wish I had a better suggestion for the marginalized. I feel this movement would be more constructive if it had powerful leadership that articulated specific changes to be made. I think there would be an opportunity to enlarge the tent to actually include a lot of Trump voters.

there are specific asks being made. - Taking dollars allocated to police departments and re-allocating them to schools and health to prevent the school-prison pipeline. - Electing progressive DAs. - Diminishing the power of police unions. - Bringing back DOJ oversight of police

i think those are great asks. If you are saying you think these are well known -- that the people of the USA observing this see more than just expressed anger but also a plan put forth for progress -- I hope you are right but it has not been my impression.

Another proposal which may be part of long-term solution: every citizen does a tour of duty as police. This means the police & community are the same. Not a separate force barking from Humvees, but the person next door. Significant cost in terms of time, but far more empathy.
