Reading @jialynnyang's book. Rekt by this paragraph. Imagine being an Asian-American fighting all the way to the Supreme Court for citizenship, losing, and then having your only son die fighting for this country in WWII. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozawa_v._United_States …pic.twitter.com/1BHvZLoUeX

As you can tell, I like U.S. immigration policy histories. "Impossible Subjects" by Mae Ngai is also great. https://www.amazon.com/Impossible-Subjects-Illegal-America-Politics-ebook/dp/B00HKMUY5C/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=mae+ngai&qid=1590443102&s=digital-text&sr=1-2 …

And so is "The Guarded Gate," which is almost like a prequel to Yang's book about the run-up to the 1924 immigration law and its roots in eugenics and race science. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MKDJP4Z/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 …

America has systematically, brutally discriminated against people unless they were Caucasian. Since the first Western Europeans made it here. Why anyone expects any different today is surprising to me. Immigrants have always fought the tide against them, gentle or sharp.

They didn't exactly treat Irish, Italians, or Eastern Europeans kindly either.

The book Imbeciles: The Supreme Court, American Eugenics, and The Sterilization of Carrie Buck really opened my eyes to American immigration policy pre-WWII. This book sounds interesting as well. It's important to understand the dark side of American history.

And if you say that in American history class as a kid, no matter what evidence you present, you'll face a huge amount of anti-semitism from your non-Jewish classmates, and push-back from your Jewish classmates as well. I know because it happened to me.

The saddest part of this is, as my cousin does our family history, we are starting to know who was saved and who died. Everyone who was saved was able to come to America. Immigration policy during that period was so terrible for so many...
