Corona was an overnight failure, years in the making. And it was made by the regulatory state & its cheerleaders, who disabled America’s ability to quickly innovate in the physical world. To build, and to rebuild, we must sweep aside obsolete regulations. https://www.wsj.com/articles/innovation-cant-be-forced-but-it-can-be-quashed-11589555004 …pic.twitter.com/XurbQu808S

This clip is exactly right: > In “The Innovation Illusion” (2016), Fredrik Erixon and Bjorn Weigel argue that Western economies have “developed a near obsession with precautions that simply cannot be married to a culture of experimentation.”

I also broadly agree with @mattwridley on IP. Regulations & patents alike are a form of artificial scarcity. Businesses operate under the incentives that policy makers set, but the software industry shows that it doesn’t need to be that way. And software is eating the world.

People actually do want regulated marketplaces, with quality control and bans of bad actors. It’s expensive to test every food or drug yourself. But in the situation where the regulator *themselves* is a bad actor, you need a choice of marketplaces. Like in different countries.

Feels like you need a more granular take. It’s the lack of federal coordination, to streamline regulation + speed process in some areas, allocate resources to others, stand up demand by using the Defense Production Act so the private sector is quickly incentivized to produce PPE

          > Defense Production Act A good way to incentivize would be an Advance Market Commitment (“we will buy masks above a certain quality level at X dollars each”) A bad way is DPA. That’s like making a random bureaucrat into the CEO of the company 🙂

Agreed, Kim. Private marketplaces are sharing IP/licensing easily (e.g. GM) and beginning to aggregate such sharing (e.g. XPRIZE's Exchange and PN95's mfg forum). One major issue I'm grappling with is with D2C masks not being standardized via FDA aside from a loose April 24 EUA

Like, I'm supposed to prioritize routing distribution to states/cities, companies' essential workers based on what exactly? Self-compliance off of clearly insufficient regulatory guardrails in an exploding market where getting things too wrong sees people dead in two weeks
