Do stay-at-home moms in countries with appropriately subsidized childcare systems think of what they do with their kids any more like labor than stay-at-home moms here? I honestly just think the causal claim here is wrong

As in free, equitably funded, quality day care / preschool? The horror, lol. But that’s better framed as an investment in the kids, not as compensation to one or both parents.

You're comparing to countries with lower birth rates. Either their subsidies aren't effective or they need them because the situation is more desperate. Are there good examples of countries actually increasing birthrates with their subsidies?

Let alone that the real question is why people are having fewer kids. But that is very hard to address in this environment because there are real tradeoffs. The answer could be that women now value education and working more than kids. Who is to say which matters more?
