There are enough vacant homes in San Francisco to house the city’s entire homeless population TEN TIMES OVER. #HousingForAllhttps://twitter.com/e_baldi/status/1256306400579313664 …

In no way do I mean for this to come off as pedantic, but would you mind sharing where you got that number from? I've tried to keep my ear to the ground re: talk of a residential vacancy census. Genuinely interested -- such a figure would seem critical in shaping policy/debate.

The SF Point-In-Time count for 2019 revealed approx 8,000 people experiencing homelessness. The commonly-referenced (from SPUR to the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project) 30k vacant homes comes from a 2015 American Community Survey. Multiplied by approx 2.8 resident capacity per home.

It’s an imperfect number but oft-cited and high enough that it should spark outrage even if wildly off. It certainly justifies what many have suggested and few have made real progress on, which is a formal City-implemented registry of rental homes in San Francisco.

Got it. I appreciate the info. To be clear, this is not some 'explain every inch of this and I'll gleefully point out your errors at the atomic level' kind of thing. Genuinely interested in how these figures enter the zeitgeist. Will do my homework now.

As we’ve learned in other contexts, whether a home is “for rent” or “for sale” doesn’t tell us much at all without the term/duration of those vacancies in the context of a highly speculative market.

And category 3 and 4 are still more than double the homeless population.

And that's from a 2012 version of the ACS report? Terner Ctr paper mentions a 2015 report (http://ternercenter.berkeley.edu/uploads/CR_Final_2.3.19.pdf …). Are these reports/estimates produced regularly?

Not sure. Not as large a discrepancy between the 2012 and 2015 estimates as one might expect, tho..
